Topical authority is how thoroughly and coherently your site covers one subject, proven through depth, entity coverage, and internal links between related pages, not through how many posts you publish. It is the signal that decides whether Google and AI tools treat you as the source on a topic, or just another page about it.
Most local businesses have this backwards. They publish a post when there is time, on whatever comes to mind, and wait for it to add up. It does not add up. A stack of disconnected posts is not authority, no matter how long the stack gets. Architecture is. This is what that means, why AI search made it matter more than it did two years ago, and exactly how a small local business builds it without a content team.
What is topical authority, really?
It is a ranking signal built from three things: how deeply each page covers its slice of a topic, how coherently your pages cover the concepts inside that topic, and how well those pages link to each other. Publishing volume is not on that list. Studio Hawk defines it as a signal derived from entity relationships, internal link structure, and content depth, not from how much you publish.
Break that into the parts a search engine actually weighs. Entities are the concepts inside a topic and how they connect. Cover a subject and the terms around it coherently, and Google reads that as real understanding, not keyword coincidence. Internal links tell it which of your pages belong together. A page with links from fifteen related articles on your site carries more topical weight than the same page sitting alone. Depth is per page: a focused 1,200-word page that answers three real sub-questions beats a 4,000-word page that repeats surface advice.
This is also where topical authority and domain authority part ways. Domain authority measures who trusts your whole site, mostly through backlinks. Topical authority measures what your site actually knows about one thing. They move differently, and the gap matters for a small business: a local site with modest domain authority but deep, well-linked coverage of one topic can outrank a big generic brand for that topic. AI tools do this openly, citing lower-authority sites that answer a question completely (SearchAtlas, 2026). Topical authority is the more winnable of the two.
Why did AI search raise the stakes?
Because AI search stopped grading you page by page and started grading you topic by topic. A classic search engine ranked ten blue links, and a thin page could sneak onto page one for one keyword. An answer engine does something different: it takes one question, breaks it into many, and pulls from the sources that answer all of them.
That breaking-apart step is called query fan-out. When someone asks an AI tool a real question, the system quietly decomposes it into 8 to 12 related sub-queries, searches each, and stitches the results into one answer with citations (Conductor, 2026). The site that answers only one facet gets cited for one facet, if at all. The site that covers the whole topic gets pulled in again and again.
There is now hard data on how much that matters. A Surfer study of 10,000 keywords and roughly 174,000 URLs found that pages ranking for a topic's fan-out queries, not just the main keyword, were 161% more likely to be cited in Google's AI Overviews. Pages that ranked for the main query plus at least one fan-out query captured 51% of all citations. Pages ranking for the main query alone captured just under 20% (Surfer, via Search Engine Land, 2025).

Can you just publish your way there?
No. This is the part most people get wrong. Publishing more does not build topical authority any more than buying more bricks builds a house. A collection of articles about a topic is not a topical authority structure. A deliberately mapped, interlinked architecture is. That is the whole difference.
Harry Sanders frames it bluntly: 40 thorough articles that cover one topic in a connected structure beat 400 thin pages chasing scattered keywords. The 400 look like more work. They perform like less, because none of them reinforce the others. Volume without structure just scales confusion, for you and for the crawler trying to figure out what your site is actually about.
The reason architecture compounds and volume does not is the internal link graph. When ten pages on a topic link to each other and up to a hub, each new page makes the others stronger. When ten pages sit in isolation, the tenth is exactly as weak as the first. One curve bends up over time. The other stays flat.

What does the structure actually look like?
It is a cluster, and the cluster has four parts, each doing a different job. Get these four working together and you have a unit search engines and AI tools recognize as coverage. Publish only one of them and you have a page.
- The hub page. One page targeting the head term for the topic. It gives the overview and links out to every supporting page. This is the page you most want to rank, and it borrows strength from everything linked to it.
- Supporting pages. The spokes. Each one answers a specific sub-question in real depth and links back to the hub and, where it makes sense, sideways to its siblings. These are where most of your fan-out coverage lives.
- Glossary entries. Short pages that define the terminology of the topic. They build the entity vocabulary that tells a search engine you understand the subject, and they catch the "what does X mean" questions AI tools ask constantly.
- An FAQ. The long-tail and conversational questions, answered plainly. These map almost one-to-one onto the sub-queries AI search fans out into, which is exactly why they get cited.
The point is not to have four content types for their own sake. It is that a real question has layers: an overview, specific problems, definitions, and quick answers. Cover all four layers and you have answered the whole question. Cover one and you have answered a slice.
How does a local business build it?
Start with a map, not a keyword list. A keyword list produces disconnected pages. A topical map produces a structure. Pick one topic you actually want to be known for, then lay out the hub, the spokes, the definitions, and the questions before you write a single page. Once the map exists, the build is three moves. Write the cluster, each page in its role, hub first so the spokes have something to point at. Link it up with descriptive anchor text, so "furnace short cycling" is the link, not "click here." Anchor text is how you tell a search engine what the page you are pointing to is about, and vague anchors waste that signal. Then link outward from the topic to the rest of your site where it is genuinely relevant, so the cluster connects to your service and contact pages.
Does it work? The clearest external proof is Kip&Co, an ecommerce brand that built architecture before content and saw 33% organic revenue growth year over year, 72% more new organic users, and 67% more page-one keywords, with the deepest pages in the cluster performing best (Studio Hawk). - Coverage ratio. Of the real sub-questions inside your topic, what share do you actually have a page for? This is the most useful one, and it is the whole game shown below.
- Internal link depth. How many of your own pages link to a given page. Rising depth across a cluster means the structure is forming.
- Ranking breadth. Not one keyword's position, but the number of related keywords across the cluster where you appear at all. Breadth widening is topical authority working.
